Review: Preparing for Uni, University of East Anglia

17 Mar

*Written by Christina Zygakis

In the era of information, when everything is carried out and delivered fast, academic e-learning is earning more and more ground, covering most disciplines and many courses are delivered free of charge. There are many platforms out there, but today I will speak about my experience with the platform FutureLearn (http://www.futurelearn.com) and the course “Preparing for Uni”, delivered by the University of East Anglia, which I found excellent.

Although the programme targeted high school students, people of all levels participated, including mature students. Furthermore, as it is normal for e-learning courses, the participants came from all over the world and actively interacted.

The programme was divided into six weekly sessions, each week discussing a different topic; preparing for and attending lectures (Week One), independent study (Week Two), plagiarism and appropriate referencing (Week Three), collecting and using numerical data to support arguments (Week Four), textual analysis (Week Five), and appropriate structuring (Week Six). In every session there were exercises and questions, giving the opportunity to the participants to “put their minds to work”.

The parts that particularly impressed me were the numerical data session, where I have to think in numerical terms and remembered the how significant numerical data is in any field, and the textual analysis section, where the tutors used a poem to make the participants reflect about the role of literature in politics.

Given the very important topics discussed, the very good structure and the high level of interaction included, I highly recommend this course to anyone who planning to begin an academic course, no matter his level or age. The next session is starting on 16 June 2014.
