Vacancy: Senior Consultant/Consultant– Food Chain & Agricultural Economics, London/Plymouth

20 Jan

“GHK is recruiting for senior consultant economist or consultant economist to work on food chain and farming policy issues. The successful applicant will join a team that provides policy-relevant research, analysis, evaluation and strategy services to the European Commission, the UK government and other (mostly public sector) clients on food chain issues.   The post is located in the UK, either in our central London or our Plymouth office.

We work in a project-based environment offering exposure to a range of policy issues and analytical challenges. Assignments typically involve the application of a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and often involve extensive stakeholder consultations within the UK or across the EU.

A keen interest in public policy as it relates to agriculture and the food chain is essential for this post. An understanding of the interactions between the food chain and the environment or public health would also be helpful.

The successful candidate will be heavily involved in supporting assignments procured from a framework contract that GHK holds with the European Commission for provision of evaluation and impact assessment services on food chain issues.   These studies cover a wide range of issues – the economics of improving food safety, plant genetic resources, control of animal diseases, the financing of official controls – but all require an ability to work across the EU and combine excellent analytical skills with an appreciation of the policy process.

The successful applicant will be

–  qualified to at least MSc level, with one or more degrees that have a strong economic component (and preferably agricultural economics);

–  competent in the application of economic and econometric analysis, and comfortable with a range of quantitative methods and management of large or complex datasets.

–  able to demonstrate professional experience in the research, design, appraisal or evaluation of public policy relating to agriculture and/or the wider food chain in the UK or EU. Familiarity with impact assessment methodologies would be an advantage.

–   excellent written English is a prerequisite.  Competence in one or more other European languages is also required.

This post is heavily focused on public policy. An understanding of supply chains is helpful but the role does not involve analysis of commodity or equity markets.  Candidates looking for work in brokerage, trading, investment advice or financial analysis of equity or commodity markets need not apply.

We are only able to accept applications from people who are already eligible to work in the European Union.
