Foreign Affairs Book Review: Russia and the West From Alexander to Putin: Honor in International Relations

8 Jun

Tsygankov believes that the Russian sense of honor is the key to understanding the long history of the country’s relations with the West. His exegesis applies well to the Putin era, but for the larger picture, theory’s demand for tidiness forces a certain amount of cutting and splicing of history.

Foreign Affairs: What Xi Wants

7 Jun

As Obama and Xi meet today, it is a good thing that they are apparently more interested in substance than formalities. Both are aware of the need to develop a new type of great-power relationship built on partnership, and the best way for them to do so is to roll up their sleeves and get to work.

Course: Capacity Development, Diplo Foundation

6 Jun

Diplo Foundation is offering a nine-week online course in Capacity Development. The description of the programme is as follows:

Capacity development has been emerging as a central approach within development for more than two decades. This approach has gradually shifted the focus of development practice from simple financial aid and technical cooperation towards a complex new paradigm that encourages and demands active involvement and ownership from the people and communities involved in aid programmes. The approach takes into account the broader political, social, and economic environment in which change takes place. Capacity development co-exists and is supported by older forms of development practice, and is a continuously shifting paradigm as experience informs policy, practice and theory.

To help you better understand and master this complex paradigm, this course introduces the key concepts, principles and values of capacity development. The main focus is on building practical skills for better design, planning, implementation and assessment of capacity development initiatives.

The deadline is 22 July 2013.

Who was Margaret Thatcher? She was born as Margaret Roberts in 31 October 1925 in Grantham (Linconshire county) and attended Kensteven and Grantham Girls School as well as Oxford, and studied both Chemistry and Law.
